Goal or Issue

eDatatel Solutions identified an astounding one-third of client’s total wireless account spend came from international roaming and long distance fees, approximately double current best in class benchmarks for similarly sized international companies. Between April and June, average roaming usage was 21,680 minutes per month, or 0.7% of total voice usage, however the average roaming cost was $144,950 per month, or 45% of total voice spend.

 
Current Situation
 
  • The objective of this project was to identify immediate and near term wireless savings opportunities for over 5,000 lines with AT&T Mobility.
  • Client averaged 1,940,000 billable voice minutes of use
  • Has 537 Data Connect broadband cards, 463 of which are on unlimited domestic data plans; the remaining are on international data plans
  • 517 lines on international Blackberry plans
  • Currently spend on average more than $2,500/month on (costly) 411 Directory Assistance Calls
 
Capability Needed

Savings stems in large part from cutting international roaming and long distance spend by over 50% ($1,385,000, or over 22% of current wireless costs) and eliminating costly 411 Directory Assistance calls by 100% through the implementation of a real-time mobile monitoring system that detects when international calls are placed and transparently reroutes them through alternative, substantially less expensive, avenues such as VoIP.

 
Key Findings/Results
 
  1. International roaming fees will decrease from $145,000 per month to $34,800 or 76% ($1,320,000 annual savings).
  2. Reduced $15,000 monthly long distance voice costs by as much as 58%
  3. (or $104,000 estimated annual savings)
  4. Monthly 411 Directory Assistance calls ($2,500 per month) reduced 100% (or an estimated $30,529 annual savings)
  5. 171 voice lines (4% of voice lines) averaged zero minutes and zero megabytes of use between April and June. In June, the total monthly cost of these lines was $12,842.20 ($75.11 per line/month or a maximum of $154,106 annual savings), much of which could be saved if these lines were disconnected.
  6. Total estimated annual savings is $1,540,000 while having wireless spend truly optimized.
